The Label Isn’t the Problem, It’s the Solution

The Stigmatizing Nature of Labels and Their Affiliation with Preconceptions.

In general, labels are stigmatizing because they are affiliated with preconceptions. These beliefs are often misleading and based on misunderstandings. They can cause stress and segregation which isn’t helpful.

Being labeled as having an eating disorder often comes with a stigma as with other mental health conditions. This label can be misleading because few people truly understand eating disorders. This can cause people to become defensive or reject treatment. If people focus more on the label they can become more concerned about denying the issue or proving otherwise than treating it.

The label, however, isn’t the problem, it’s the misunderstanding surrounding it that is the problem. Often the issue isn’t taken as seriously until it is given a diagnosis. Therefore the diagnosis is an essential part of initiating the correct treatment process.

Additionally, the label gives guidance toward achieving the solution.  In healthcare, diagnoses are solution focused because they guide treatment by helping provide treatment standards and establishing systematic processes based on best practice guidelines.

Therefore the label is part of the solution because it initiates, explains, and directs the treatment approach.
